Elephant Poo Paper

What is the process for making Elephant Poo paper?

Elephant dung consists of mainly cellulose fibre – raw material from which paper is made. All that is done to the dung is it is dried, washed and disinfected to get rid of everything but the fibre and making it bacteria free. Then, the residue is boiled for four hours, beaten, dyed and converted into paper.

It is about 15 kilos of elephant dung yields, which make about 500 sheets of thin paper.

The paper is bacteria free, odour free (don’t take our word for it, smell it yourself) and eco-friendly.

Does the paper smell?

Absolutely not, there is no bad odour from the paper and it is completely clean.

Are the Elephant poo products completely natural?

It’s crafty, uniquely textured and 100% recycled, but you will never guess that this paper is made from elephant poo!

Colours, if added, comprise of mostly vegetable and natural dyes. No bleach is used. The wastewater is let out into cultivated fields close by and works as a great fertilizer, the elephants are free to roam in the fields.

The colour of the paper depends entirely on what the elephant eats, which depends on what season of the year it is. An elephant’s diet is primarily vegetation. This all makes elephant dung one of the best to make paper.

What about the Elephants?

The elephants live in a rural community in India and are looked after by the family that make the paper. The elephants are free to roam and are feed a vegetarian diet.
